I've had this annoying tapping sound when the engine is running, which I can hear only in the car. It is intermittant, but seems to be getting worse. I can also feel the fuel lines pulsing when the tapping is heard.
I think it is fuel related because when I get the tapping, I get a loss of power.
Today it was really annoying me, and as I finished early today and it was sunny, I decided to do a bit more investigating.
I used a large cabinet screwdriver as a stephescope and listened all over the engine. The part I can hear it loudest is on the fuel rail. The tapping increase with engine speed, it is the same noise as you get from an injector, but a little louder.
Now, if I rev the engine to the limiter, the tapping goes away and if I listen to the fuel rail, all I can hear is the chattering of the injectors ( I assume)
I can listen to each injector in turn, they all sound the same and when the tapping is gone from the fuel rail, the car drives fine.

So, my question is, what in the fuel rail will cause this tapping / loss of power, but more importantly, how can i fix it.

The engine is a 4 cylinder 1800cc C180. FSH, 107000miles, newly serviced. Its had new plugs, coils, leads, MAF, O2 sensor, fuel pump and filter recently, the tapping has been there throughout.

When the tapping is gone, the engine purrs as quiet as it always did.

Any ideas?
