If you're selling a car, the buyer wants a test drive, but who's insurance covers your car during the test drive, yours or his/hers ?

I would say that the only proof of insurance you have in these situations is your own. Consequently you would be allowing them to drive the car on your insurance with third party cover.

If the prospective buyer was adamant that they required to test drive the car a prior arrangement with your insurer for a slight additional premium might cover it.

So if buyer crashes your precious car and it's buyer's fault, bang goes everything. I'll check with my insurance.

..and don't believe them if they say they're covered anyway. Not all policies cover Driving Other Cars (DOC) and it's generally restricted to over 25's, and it's *always* 3rd Party only. It also only covers the Policy Holder, and NOT anybody else, even named drivers on the policy.

There are several mentions in forums of people who said they were covered, then drove & crashed the car they were testing only to find that they were not covered.

Because of the confusion and misuse of DOC, it's gradually being removed by insurance companies anyway. I can't imagine why it ever existing in the first place.

No test drives without full payment or proof of fully comprehensive cover.

You can take them out for a drive with you driving, i've not had problems doing things this way

Hi Rory,

You are obviously "job" or Ex Job.

Yes i'm with you, God only know's who started the DOC extension - it's been abused for years !

i myself have for many years run powerful motorbikes without insurance, other than the trusty DOC - i've saved thousands !!

i'll miss it when it go's, but for the good of the insurance industry, the quicker it is stopped, the better.........

The driving other cars extensions only applied if you didnt own the vehicle and said vehicle had a seperate insurance policy on it

IE

If your own car policy has a driving other cars clause on it you may drive your mates car with his permission provided he is also insured

BUT

You cant buy another vehicle register in your wifes name and then drive it under the DOC clause
