A free health check turns into a list of problems that you either need to pay stupid money to fix which they'll use to talk you into a 212.

Clever

I'd love to hear your thoughts on the 212. Its not a looker like a 211 (But I would say that) but it does seem an impressive peice of kit and a worthy successor to my current trusty steed. Particularly in 250cdi spec with lots of goodies.

I didn't get an invitation, but I did get a follow up call to ask if I would be accepting it (!).

I suppose there are always teething troubles with a new model. I just hope that the technical staff are more joined up than the "front of house" presentational "specialists? :(

That's the problem for me now Alex, don't get the new model training, but I'm guessing its a 221 under the covers, oh, i forgot, i do still have access to the training manuals:D:D:D:D

Remarkable little trouble with the 204's, maybe this car (as there is a lot of 204 in there) would be the same. Only 1 negative thread I've seen re 204s involving a dealer damaging a car and problems with torque convertors (which IIRC are used in the other cars).

The sales staff will have their work cut out for them, I don't envy someone trying to sell a £30k + car in these economic times so as usual the cars sell themselves. Afterall, when did a salesman actually make you decide to buy something. Before I walked into MB dealer I knew I was going to buy an 211, which one I didn't know

Theres been more faults with a 204 than people know, ok, only small ones but there about! its based on the 221 which is pretty good, but again, has its hidden problems!!

204 based on 221 :shock: There is something I didn't know. Are MB now going down the modular floor structure route so one template does all cars.

So a 204 saloon is a cut price 221. Nice. Shame they didn't pull it off inside the car with leather covered dashboards, and seats to die for. A 221 would be a lottery win car for me, in 65AMG trim

All modern cars have problems though, E90 BMWs have trouble with groaning PAS systems, all 4 clyinder diesel and petrol engines have major problems, diesel 6s are no stranger to a replacement turbo and no 6 clyinder car see's past 200k because once a "barry" gets his hands on it, which they do, its doomed.

I looked at A6 Audi's and the electric parking brake is playful and a good gearbox is a lottery. On the whole the 204 must outperform that lot. I imagine the 212 will (and its got to be better than when the 211 was introduced).

Where did it go?

There was a flurry of promotional material earlier this year, anticipating the launch of the new E Class.

A thread was started (http://forums.mercedesclub.org.uk/showpost.php?p=315157&postcount=1) and it contained an e-mail address for contact. I tried but the e-mail address they provided led to a note from Mailer Demon (no such address). Some detective work and a telephone call led to me being added to a list of interested people who would be contacted in due course.

Well, perhaps I will be.

I went to the launch at MB Huddersfield last Friday (12th) they had 6 x 212's in for the launch with 1 being the coupe in 350CDI guise. Overall I think it is quite nice and the centre dash with comand display looks quite like the W221 S Class, lots more black plastic on the inside but nothing like as bad as the W204 IMHO. The curved lights in the roof have gone along with the "art deco" feel to the interior which I really like in mine. They have also gone for the Audi LED running lights which are obviously de-rigeur at the moment. The LED indicators are as bright as a bright thing.

They have improved the emissions and fuel economy however the 0-60 and top speeds remain the same on the 350CDI as my W211 320CDI and overall average of 40.9 mpg is ~ 5mpg better than my W211 and the emissions are 181 (IIRC) which puts it £40 per year better than my W211. Working on 12,000 miles per year the new 350CDI would be £183 cheaper in fuel and £40 less in VED, £223 overall better off so not a great deal in the scheme of things.

I do notice that the list prices are slightly lower than the W211 and that the options list seems quite small compared to previous versions.

I got one, you can have it.

Im penniless after spending 18k on a 28 month old e-class so until i win the lottery they can keep the 212.

I went to Thruxton on friday to test the new E and coupe.

I was VERY impressed with the coupe (207)

( I drove a S63 around the track. It was like driving your living room round)

I forgot to mention earlier they had parked outside a very nice 300CE Sportline that was immaculate and a pre-face lift W210 that had a rusty drivers side wheel arch.

Something I think all makers are moving towards as daylight running lights are mandatory in a couple of years,& leds have the lowest carbon penalty for this
