On a proramme on BBC2 tonight, it said that Methane is 23 times worse than CO2 for the atmosphere.

I did some sums to put my evil car usage into perspective

-The average cow produces 541lt/per day of methane

at 70 deg.f it has a specific gravity of 0.554

Which, by my reconing makes it 300.268 kg/day

If methane is 23 times worse for the environment, then it works out as the equivalent of 6906.164 kg of CO2 per day, or 6,906,164 grams/day

If the average car produces roughly 200g/km of CO2, then 1 cow is the eqivalent of 34530.82 km of driving per day.....or 21461.04 miles!

I was a bit shocked at this.....dont you think that it is time this rediculous media guilt trip was ended, along with the CO2 footprint money spinner?

Puts it in perspective for me

There is no way that 541 litres of a gas could weigh 300kgs (or 660 lbs) That would be over a pound for every litre of gas. Back to the drawing board!:D

What makes you say that? Its science - i worked it out from its specific gravity.

This sadly is the problem. Yes we are having an impact on global warming. However, the car is such a small factor that even if we all stopped driving altogether it would make absolutely no difference. Ok, cows are a big factor, but to be fair, we need them and they are natural at the end of the day. We've had herds cattle for eons without issue.
Power generation, manufacturing and shipping cause vastly greater emmissions than cars per head of population but to affect that would require politicians to tackle the big boys, and that would risk them losing their lucrative future jobs - so they go after the little guy instead (especially this bunch of ..).
Add in the fact that in the same way as declaring your interest in the internet in the late 90's guaranteed you investment, irrespective of what it was or it's relevance, scientists get money if, and only if, they are doing something related to global warming, howver ill- founded and irrelevant.

I do believe that many of the so called specialists and university professors are building sizable careers on this issue at the same time raking in pots of money for spurious research projects for their employers.

What really urinates me off is the continual carping of the beard and sandal brigade who seem to want to stop every individual driving, traveling, farting and +**^"~# then they want erected thousands of those ****** unsightly and expensive wind turbines in every city, town and village in the land as well as around every inch of the coast.

I'm off out to try and find one to argue with. No doubt a few state funded students will be in town this afternoon handing out doom and gloom leaflets instead of doing their "media studies" degree, not that that adds much value to the good old 'British' economy.

If there was no motor transport we would all have to run around using horsepower. Imagine the pile of horse sh*t that just London would need cleared of every day.
Cars, vans and lorries are necessary and we could not survive without them.
Its about time green issues were put into context.

Nothing new there, the impact of farming/meat production has been raised before. Didn't some minister make a remoark about it last year and the Daily Mail run a "shock" we must all become veggies article.

Interestingly I did a Carbon Footprint survey last night - driving > 16K miles a year got me 20 points as did eating meat more than 7 times a week.

So yes we should be paying just as much attention to how much meat we eat as how many miles we drive.

I now feel guilty of eating too much meat - cheese and pickle sandwich for lunch then!

Hm - so can I offset my journey to work that way. Fun journey = veggie lunch, sedate journey = beef??

Here's some ammunition for you...

21 MILLION tons of CO2 a year.!

And the politicians (corrupt, lying buggers) and tree huggers are concerned about us leaving TV's on standby, using cars, animal farts - I think NOT.

TV standby - theres another one that P's me off.
Allegedly they use a lot of power on standby. Why????
All a tv needs to maintain is enough circuitry to register the remote startup signal. That, surely, could be measure in milliamps. There was a bloke on Dragons den that had designed a battery powered thing that did exactly that so it's not exactly hard to do. So, if Gordon and his friends really gave a damn, it would be really easy to legislate that this technology is built into every new tv and reciever sold in the UK. But they don't as it would upset some multi millionaire chairman somwhere. It might affect his £50m bonus this year.
Then again, these same crooks allowed firms to continue to manufacture and sell TVs in the UK that didn't have digital decoders so the poor mug on the street could be unknowingly sold a TV with built in obsolescence and then screwed for the cost of a set box later, filling the pockets of those same chairmen that will give Gordon and his pals directorships later down the track.

What really hacks me off is that nobody has even voted for the current maniac that is running the country!

What's all that about? Let us have an election.

20,000 a month have decided that they are unable to change it - and, like us, are voting with their feet and bank balances, by leaving.!!
