Dreaming of a CL55k - one day maybe....
Popped into Merc in Weston super Mare today to talk to them about servicing costs.

Whilst there, saw an SL63 V12Kompressor in the showroom, couple of years old, 28000 miles on it....

£52000

Now I don't know exactly, but aren't these £100k new??

If so, that is 50% depreciation in a couple of years - that is staggering and really makes a mockery of the so-called "good" residuals for Merc.

Good price for it's next owner mind ;)

That sounds about right, the days of running a new MB for a year/18 months (70's & 80's), and then getting back what you paid for it are now a distant memory.

On one of the other forums I frequent someone's just bought an Aston with a £39k discount. Gives you a bit of a head start on depreciation.

My W124 is still worth what I paid for it a couple of years ago. :)

New car depreciation has always been horrific - try buying a new roller and see what you get back in 12 months!
VAT, dealer profit and enough of a gap to entice someone into a used car rather than a new one. It all has to be paid for.
My car in the car buying heyday 3 years ago - list price at the spec, around £37k, 11 months old and I saved £10,000 on it. Ok, no doubt there would have been some discount on that £37k but not that much.
The Wife's 12 months old Landrover- new £30k, I paid £21k - 30% off in 1 year - and that was on a new, highly desirable model.
I've bought 2 new cars in my life - Everyone should do it once, but its out of my system now and I won't be doing it again.

Depreciation runs on percentages - so the higher the value, the greater the cash saving. Hence i buy 12 months old, benifiting from the initial drop wihich in cash terms is always the greatest drop it will make. I get 2 years full manufacturers warranty and often extend it. A modern car that's 1 year old (with a private plate) still looks and feels brand new.
I then keep them for at least 5 years as by that point, a £25k car is worth maybe £8k and is dropping by only 1-1.5k per year.

;)

I bought my W220 in December 2006 at age 2 for 45% of its original invoice price of 2 years previously. It had been in the dealership for nearly 6 weeks (they go to auction at the end of that time) and the price had been discounted for the final week.

Nothing wrong with the car, just the timing of the deal. The dealership wanted to move it on at least loss and fulfill a sales quota by year end.

They had spent £140 on the car (don't ask me on what) and wanted to see a margin of £1,000 on the deal, so the chap who sold it got about 43% of his outlay after about 100 weeks.

The price I paid was holding up very well until fuel prices, VED and the finance market all conspired against me. Now I am a loser like everyone else! Happily, like 124s, my 129 value looks solid.

A colleague recently paid £38k, cash for a brand new Range Rover (OTR price on windscreen - £62,500) from a LR Main Dealer.

There are some good bargains to be had out there - if you have the cash.!!!!!

 For that amount of money I would expect every extra to be included!

Just had a quick look and the extra's are around £30k if you want them all

My 2004 SL55 AMG was around £117k new with all the extras, and l paid £37k for it last November from a MB dealer including 2 years MB warranty so the term "warp drive depreciation" does indeed spring to mind.

My SL cost £98 from new, and I will have soon had it 3 years, its taken a tumble since I bought it but as I am not selling it, it does not matter, I love the car, so thats fine.

Once the economic recovery starts the prices will rise again to their true values

That's interesting you think that the prices will rise - l assumed that now they have dropped they seem to have reached a plateau and that was there new 'true' market value. What a bonus if they go back up in value.

They must do that otherwise new cars will no longer be viable for anyone other than a company. 10k off the asking price on new car offers, must mean the same off all of the secondhand ones that are almost new.

See today that Ford have put up prices of some models by around 3 to 4% of no interest to the elite I'm sure but will others follow?

With the Euro down 35% this must happen
