She currently drives a really nice Saab 9-5 estate but it's somewhat wasted on what she uses it for and as she is going to be medically retired in the very near future I was thinking of selling the Saab and buying a W124 E300 estate ( needs to be an estate as the youngster has horses) On the basis that we do most of the mileage in my C200 and that she probably does 100 miles per week going to the stables and back is it worth going for a diesel or should I just take whatever comes along. Looking to spend about £1500.

All advice is greatly appreciated.

TIA

Sorry to say that you cant get a horse in the back of an E300, well not in one piece

Considering that if you cover <12,500 miles per year it is not really worth the extra price of a diesel. With the extra cost of the car and the fuel you really need to be doing the miles to get the benefit. However if you find a nice diesel for the same money as a petrol then you may as well have it.

Go for the petrol model, Blobcat is right, you need lots of miles to offset the extra cost of diesel, and maybe the extra price you pay for the car. I may be wrong, but I think a W124 estate in that price range, would actually be called a 300TE.

Hello SCOUSETECHIE!
My advice is to concentrate on what is available for you money in good working order with no outstanding expensive jobs to be done. Just remember whatever you are looking at the likely hood is most will be high mile examples. Diesels last longer than their petrol counterparts so think about that if looking at a high mileage petrol. The 300TE = 3litre. "T" stands for the model series. Thats why many people when they see "TD" in estate form they wrongly think turbo diesel. No turbos were available to this country in estate form. The 3 litre petrol does drink fuel unless you have a very light foot. Think about the 220 = 2.2 litre. Up to you. You wont regret the buy but there are many examples out there that have been neglected. Look around. Good luck!
