I've just replaced a 110.981 motor in my W114 280CE (1976) with another motor, a 110.984 from a spares W123 saloon. Annoyingly, almost all the pipes, brackets and ancillaries were different, meaning that I had to swap them all over in a weekend, while I had use of the engine crane. I did it, with the exception of one thing.
There was a pipe running from the thermostat, to the inlet manifold, and then another pipe from it, into the engine block through a fitting on the side of the block. One the replacement engine, there was a blanking plate with a 17mm female hex socket. No amount of pressure on my admittedly inappropriate tools (who casually has a 17mm male hex driver on a 1/2" socket? I have one, but it was on a 3/8" socket drive, and I didn't have a 3/8" drive breaker bar or 3/8"-1/2" adapter, but thats almost too much detail...) could undo the blanking plate. So, I never swapped this over and I blanked off the pipe from the thermostat instead.
Now, there's no sensors or wires in this cooling circuit, so I am assured that the fuel injection won't receive a false coolant temp reading and never take the fuel mapping out of "warm up sequence" and into "normal running".
My question is, what does this cooling circuit do? My best guess is that its a device to speed up warm up/aid running by heating the inlet air/throttle body. Or it could be some type of anti-ice measure. And the other question is, should I re-make this coolant circuit, but take the outlet from the inlet manifold to a different part of the cooling system (connecting it in with a 'Y' adapter), and if so where?
It seems to run alright without it, but I haven't had an emissions check done yet.
