If you look here

http://www.detali.ru/cat/oem_mb0.asp?TP=1

Find your car with the first 6 numbers of VIN, go to engine then cooling and you will see it held under the top hose connection, very simple.

got that! , thanks malcolm - im still getting over 100-110 degress in traffic even after new viscous fan (sachs) and new waterpump so I assume they may be a faulty thermostat or even temperature sender? try the thermostat first.

Thanks

Take care on this, thermostats are designed to fail in the open posistion, meaning a cooler running engine, could the sensor that transmits to the guage be faulty, someone could have fitted a winter thermostat.

The newer type of stats use a wax pelet to open and close and tend to fail closed unlike the old ones which had alcohol filled bellows which did fail in the open position so if it's a modern type it can cause overheating

Thanks for the replies people yes certainly I have encountered this before with thermostats, my intuition says temp sender but il try the cheaper option of Thermostat and see what happens.

PS - does anyone know if the viscous fans are supposed to bring the temp down to 85 even when in idle ? my feeling was this type of fan is related to engine speed ?

The fan should still lock in whatever the rpm

hmmm thats interesting, like i mentioned i have replace the fan clutch with a new viscous one (sachs) and when i open the hood it is def puksing away, seems very powerful - however like i mentioned the temp does rise to 110 even and only until i drive does it drop down, so maybe I have a faulty thermostat or temp sender? hasent overheated though ...im just being cautious

Thanks

Don't forget akz that 100 is the best possible temperture to run at.

The sensors do not cost much, is there any chance of using a thermometer laying on the top of the rad to check the gauge temp reading, just an idea.its almost as though there is a circulation problem if it drops when you drive.

agreed, il try the thermometer idea, but I have replaced the viscous fan clutch and also new water pump at the same time, so only other ideas are...thermostat (next on list) then temp sender, finally might be severe blockage in Rad pipes ect.

C180 has marks on the guage 80 is marked then inbetween then 120 so i have to guess the marker inbetween in 100 and the middle of that 110?

If you are worried about the thermostat, take it out and try running the car.

All it does is allow the engine to warm up faster and stop the temp dropping to low.

If you think it is causing the car to overheat, taking it out will cause the car to run cooler.

Another thing is put the thermostat into a pot of water and warm it up, you should see it opening as the temp increases.
