Well the title says it all.

I'm thinking of buying a W123 as a classic and I'm wondering what in particular to watch for with this model. What went on them, what wore, hidden spots taht rust etc etc etc

any info would be much appreciated!

Well, the early 230 models had a single timing chain, which wasn't really a good thing. The engine chewed through timing chains. The later models, especially the 230E had a double timin chain. This is the one that you are looking for.

Also, check for rust in the boot, and around the wheel arches and on the firewall and floor. I have found that they tend to rust in the boot under the rubber mat (if the car has a rubber mat in the boot - some had carpet) if the boot rubber had a water leak.

Otherwise, the W123's are wonderful cars and they are becoming very hard to find in excellent condition with low mileage.

In addition to the above I found the following on mine (240D) when I recently got it up on the ramps.

Engine mounts, side ones and rear ones can perish. My rear one had all but disintergrated. Drive shaft couplings. again, they can wear.

Gearbox seals for input shafts from the geat linkages. They can perish and leak oil onto the rubber bushes, which in turn can rot away. One day you won't be able to select a gear as they will have worn so much.

Shocks and springs, check these are not worn or leaking.

Gearbox mount. Again, this can simply become hard.and or breakdown and become ineffective.

Power steering system, are there any leaks?

Check the engine is leak free.

OK, only small things, but over £700 in parts to put it right. Now I have a car that I KNOW will last me at least another 100k miles.

PM me and I'll also let you have more info.
