Thinking of buying an SL circa 1985

Hello,

I've currently got a 1988 300te and I'm thinking of buying a big engined SL convertable around 20 years old. Has anyone here got one and if so what should I watch out for as I quite fancy the 500SL but I've no mechanical skills what so ever!!
