Went for a final oil change before I got the torque converter changed.

Dropped the oil from the pan drainer. Then the oil cooler pipe on the left side near the cat to drain the torque converter.

After a few minutes of the running the engine to get the oil around the box, checked the oil level and I was a little to much, so drained it. The oil went in RED and came out BROWN.

We were baffled. So filled it again ran it thru the gearbox and slowly drained about half a litre and it was slightly less brownish. Never the less it was still brownish.

Why is it going, RED to BROWN so quickly?

What’s wrong?

Thanking in advance.

It needs someone who does this to answer correctly, has anyone studied the colour of the fluid after a change, I do not think that water would do this Jib

No for a start if you drained it there would not be any water in there, I think it was Ogle that posted the same thing about a A170 engine where the same thing happened

I'll repeat my answer from the "other place"...

----It's flushing out the residual oil and crap?----

just to prompt discussion :)

Where is the crap coming from? We even took out oil from the torque converter by disconnecting the cooler pipes and running the engine. What's causing it guys? Any ideas? It's less jerky I have to say but it's still jerky. Driving me mad. Help guys pls.

I have noticed the same thing with an old w124. I don't know if it can sort of flush out rubbish, but it did have a big impact when I changed the oil after about 500 miles. I had fitted a duff gasket.

Ive just repaired an auto box on a A190 full auto, according to WIS I have to flush the transmission system under pressure with kerosene!!!!
I can only assume there will be a lot of muck still in the system and fresh oil will then mix with it, also the oil could become airated which will add to colour change, put some oil in a clean jar and see if it settles to a clearer red.

I removed the valve body from the A class gearbox yesterday to replace the shifter valves and even though the oil was a good clear red there was a good covering of black sludge on the components.

With a mixture of the bronze bearings and steel there will always be some some sludge, or it cold be the reaction of the fluid to the alli casing, its never been asked before

Yes, your 'box is in need of repair. There is excessive wear in the clutch bands and the ATF you have added is flushing out the accumulated crap.

as jib say's if a sevice was way overdue the box will have a build up of sludge in the valve block ect so when you put in new fluid it just flushed out some old sludge
