We went to see this car today and I'd really like opinions on it. I'm unsure about the age of it and wonder if it's a bit too old? Our current car is 8yrs old and I think it would be nice to have something with more gadgets in it as ours hardly has any. Keith has never been keen on how slow our current car is and likes the idea of the spec of this one as it's more like the engine size of our last C Class.

Nice car with plenty of "toys"! I think Premium plus should have powered boot open/close and upgraded audio unit - can't see that on the photos?

Does look like a nice car. But don't give too much weight to "Approved Used", do the usual checks on service history tyres brakes scratches etc and anything else you would do when buying a second hand car. Hop it pans out for you.

Looks a very nice motor. Modern Merc interiors are fantastic.

Thought of you the other day Lyn when looking at the catalogue for Hobbs Parker Ashford's 4th September sale, there was a lovely blue C250 estate - think it was an S205 rather than S204, Cdi so Adblue I guess, which would put me off - with an auction estimate of £8-8.5K! Tried today to see what it sold for, but haven't been able to find that. Sad part for me was realising what my 120k mile S204 C220Cdi needing best part of full NS repaint would go for - pennies, so we'll keep it as it runs perfectly, is so comfortable etc. If I saw a C250Cgi S204/5 it might be different, but herself thinks the S204 is now a little too big for her liking when driving. Maybe B class or MG ZS!.
Can't comment about the A class, I had one of the early ones once as a hire car to get from Humberside to Ashford, it was about the most horrible drive ever, but I gather later models are lots better (passed the moose test!!).

We went to the dealership yesterday to have a test drive. For some reason Keith left his driving licence at home so wasn't able to test drive it, so I did instead, which I hadn't planned to! Was really lovely to drive, so much lighter and more responsive than our current diesel car.
Managed to eventually get a decent px for our car and all was fine until I said I wanted to pay cash. They seem hell bent on trying to get you to buy a car on a PCP and I get that if you don't have the cash up front then it's what a lot of people do. However I do have the cash sitting in a savings account which right now is only earning me 4.81%, which is not an amazing rate but it's an easy access account and the rest of my savings are tied up in higher paying fixed rate accounts. The APR they charge at the dealership is 11.7% I think, which to me seems quite high and I kept trying to explain to the sales manager that for me it would work out cheaper paying with my savings. He was adamant I was wrong and we sat there for the best part of 3hrs going over the financial stuff to the point where I just couldn't take it all in. I did eventually agree to a PCP but now I've come home and slept on it and worked out how much interest I can earn over the 34mth PCP period it's not as much as the interest I will be paying, so I'm a bit confused. I never was any good at maths at school and it obviously shows as I just can't work out which of us is right.

I can work out who is right, and it's you, don't fall for the sales spiel. If you can pay cash do so, it's always the cheapest deal though pushy sales people don't like it, as any form of credit is the main earner for them, which is why they try so hard to push you into it. Four years ago, I bought a new C300 from a London MB dealer. I told them I'd be paying cash, and there was no trade in as I'd sold my previous car privately. The Salesman seemed to accept that, but he still went through all the finance options at great length, told me that was Company policy, I had to sign a form to say that I didn't want or need credit.

Last June I bought a new B200 from my local MB dealer. The Salesman hardly mentioned finance, and certainly didn't push it, I told him early on I'd be paying cash and he accepted that. no problem at all. I suspect that to some extent their attitude depends on how they weigh up the customer, some sales people can't take no for an answer.

Can you back out of the PCP deal you agreed to, even if it makes the car a bit more expensive?

Thanks for that reply Rob, not sure I can back out but I know I can pay the car off in full whenever I like apparently, so maybe I can pick it up as planned then phone the finance people and see how much it will cost if I pay it off right away. I don't like to take out loans for anything unless I have no other choice as it just doesn't make sense to me.

Yes Blobcat is right, it's called the 'cooling off period', I think it applies to almost any finance agreement, but do it quickly.

The Salesman won't like it, but it's your right enshrined in UK law.
If I do that can I still buy the car with the same px agreement on our existing car?

If the car you are thinking of buying has had a lot spent on preparation for sale ie, service, new tyres etc the salesman will normally be a bit pushy regarding PCP etc (as they make a better margin) but I just stick to my guns, this was the case when I bought my E53 in January I didn’t even do the trade-in with them so a lean sale for them in the end but there are so many taking out credit nowadays it’s really no big deal to them.
