thumping sound

just got a e200 1994 112000 on clock,the engine sounds sweet as a nut the manuel gear box changes quite smoothly,but when i pull away i get a thumping sound coming from the rear,then it goes off till i change up again,but when changing up you slowly let clutch out its not as bad,any ideas would be gladly excepted,new to mercedes

Sounds like play in the diff.

Sounds like one of the UJ's to me as well could well be the center bearing see picture.

Worn diff mounts, worn prop doughnuts or worn diff input pinion bearing. Or all three...

took car to see mechanic and he said its the diff,he said its the small type and these do pop,he said he could put bigger one in,,any advice would be welcome....
