I have two problems. There is an oil leak at the joint between the engine and the injection pump. Can I just remove the pump, change the gasket and put the pump back in the same position? Is it feasible to just slightly disengage the pump and add some jointing compund instead?

I am adjusting tappets and notice that as I rotate the engine, the timing chain is tight and then goes loose for a short while and then tightens again. Is this normal or is the tensioner duff (though I just refilled it)?

thanks

Had my pump out numerous times on my old 200D (old engine, heaters wired in series) along time ago. As far as I can remember the pump has a splined collar fitted to it that has a wider spline bit a one point so you couldnt put it back wrongly. The only thing is that you could still put the timing out (advance and retard) as the mounting holes on the pump are slots. I 'spill timed' my pump each time to have it correctly timed. Relatively easy job if your handy.
Not sure about your tensioner, maybe oil pressure helps keep the tensioner tight.
Wouldnt go dismantling until someone confirms(or disagrees) with my advice.

Mike
