Hi, over the past couple of months I`ve started to notice my engine w reg (202) c200 petrol with 160000 miles becoming noisey, sounds like a diesel. Could it be the timing chain needing replaced or just a tensioner? How would I check this? How much would you expect an indie to charge for a replacement chain? thanks

You will have to observe it form cold start ups. The chain should rattle excessively and sound very noisycoming from the front and not the top of the engine
You noise could well be tappets as at your mileage it is unlikely the chain will have problems.
cost for replacement is anything up to £500 and you may as well change the water pump as well while you are at it.

if it has the drive belt tentioner with the damper the lower bush on the damper might have gone to test let the engine idle and use a bar ect & put pressure on to the damper if the noise fades its the bush
