Anyone care to estimate how much this would coast at an independent?

Is it worth me buying the timing chain tensioner kit and doing this to see whether it cures it?

The voice of experience needed please, and how dangerous is it to drive it in this condition? Did 260 miles on Thursday without a problem.

Is it realistically something a competent home mechanic and a very capable next door neighbour/rally car maintainer can undertake.

My engine is making a horrible mechanical rattle from the front of the engine when revved from idle.

Is it possible this could be either the power steering/hydraulic pump?

Thanks for your help

Tony

First thing Tony is to slip the serpentine belt off and start up, this will eliminate all of the gear on the front of the engine and just leave you to listen to the engine. Do not run it too long like this but a few mins is OK from cold or warm

As Malcolm, it could well be from the front of the engine. Prime suspect would be the damper for the belt tensioner. Get a hammer handle and stick it on top of said damper then rev the engine. That's the first thing I'd do before doing the first thing Malcolm suggested.
I have replaced my chain tensioner as well though, it's a straight forward swap but you need to prime the new one before fitting. Do not fit it empty!

If Malcolms's test doesn't yield any results then its probably down to the timing chain. Is it a single or duplex(double) chain? Maybe all the w124s are duplex ---not sure. If its a single they do wear out and need changing. If its a duplex then it could be the tensioner but there are also a couple of chain guides in there. If you do just change the tensioner remember there is a correct way to install it. If its very noisy it's a timing gear case off job to see exactly what's going on.

I presume we are here:

That's horrendously complicated.

I'm off to see if I can find it.

Thanks for the replies so far.

Item 80 looks like the damper, you can't miss it. Looks like a mini shock absorber, come to think of it, that because it is a mini shock absorber.

With the belt off you can spin the idler wheel and feel for any free play,,the damper can make a lot of noise when it has failed

OK folk

Not good news I fear

The rod, part 80 Part number A1022000236 has snapped, therefore the belt is loose and I cant tighten it.

Off to Boston Mercedes now, what else apart from the rod should I get?

You were right.

The shock absorber is useless, and the adjusting rod is broken as you can see in the photo with its new replacement.

The shock is arriving tiomorrow, along with a bolt which was rounded over and was a mare to remove.

One question.

The dealer supplied me with a new plastic pointer which engages in the serrations you can see in the adjuster housing. How do I set the initial position of the pointer on reassembly?

Thanks

Its done.

New belt, correctly tensioned.

Had a good tug of the water pump pulley which was very solid, pump looks newer than original but no sign of a bill in the service history.

Thanks for the help.
