The suspension pipes are easy, you can see what needs buying and doing - then its Meccano set stuff.

I have new spheres already and a set of good used struts, but mine show every sign of being OK.

If anyone knows a cheaper source for the pipes, or can supply my at better than trade plus VAT I'm all ears.

Engine noises are different, bit like a bad smell, you never really know where its come from.

You get to know the sounds eventually,,a timing chain when worn is easily heard on start up,and lessens as the oil pressure builds up

I bought and paid for a complete timing chain kit from a seller on Ebay.

He refunded my money today saying they were unavailable.

Not been a good day.

Taking the 998cc Polo to Manchester and Bristol this week.

That will be fun, and focus my mind on getting mine sorted.

sorry tony, those sprockets are the wrong ones for your car. a 1992 model will have the duplex chain and sprockets that do not generally suffer wear.

Ok, I hope you are wrong, but fear you are not.

As far as I could tell from browsing the Russian site M102982 has the single chain.

But it could have mislead me, and I could have got it wrong.

If it is wrong at least I have a camshaft cheaply, and some bits I can sell on at my leisure.

I'll try and get the rocker box top off this weekend to satisfy myself what's in there.

If you are right then I need to start looking again at this whole issue of what the rattling noise is. Again I've been told it sounds like preignition, and I've been told that preignition sounds are a rattling timing chain.

Ho hum

You cannot have pinking at start up and idle,,it only shows when pulling in to high a gear

Will do that tomorrow.

As far as the front pipe is concerned the exhaust has been rehung with nmew MB parts, I cant see where it might rattle from- its solid pipes from the manifold to the cat and beyond.

no bulges in the front pipes just below the manifold? they ought to have pre-cats in them...but if you have had a new mb sytem fitted that would rule them out.

OK kind folk.

Of the three threads about the car I have running, this one is unresolved.

Since I dont know what the problem is I seem to have a few options:

1 Replace the timing chain tensioner - I feel confident I can do that

2 Take it to my local garage who I trust and ask for a diagnosis

3 Do nothing

4 Ask for further help here

Anyone?

There are several components affecting the timing chain- the tensioner, the tensioning rail and 2 slide/guide rails in addition to the chain and 3 sprockets involved. The first thing to try is to renew the tensioner itself--BUT its essential to do this correctly---failure will result in major mechanical failure. You should find exact instructions on the forums. If this doesn't cure it then its a strip down of the timing case to examine the other components.

I'm really sorry to be a pesky persistent pain, but the more I read the more confused I get.

The noise, which sounds like a ball bearing rattling round in a metal sphere, is apparent on startup, but much more so on revving the engine from idle, whether the engine is hot or cold.

Who is the nearest person to Boston who can listen and give me a definitive answer without it costing me lots of £.

Cheers

Tony
