Tiptronic

Hello everybody

This is going to sound like a really dumb question! Can anyone tell me how you can tell a normal auto gearbox from a tiptronic box on a W202 ? As far as I am aware my 1999 classic 2.5 TD estate is just a plain old 5 speed auto, but never having seen a tiptronic equipped car I would`nt know what to look for. (this is my first MB)

Many thanks Griz

others on here will know a lot more than me regarding your model but when your driving just tap the gearstick to the side and if your gear reading changes and your gears change then you have it, dont you have a user manual?
Ive never used the merc tip box as i think it should be changed with a tap forward and back and not to the side as mercs do.

Thanks PM

I think that answers the question. My box will change down to 4th if you move the lever to the right but thats all and there is no gear indication on the dash. Thanks

Look at the gear shift. If it is PRND with a +- by the D, its tiptronic. (You also have a gear read out on the dash). If its PRND43 etc then its not. Tiptronic is just a way of switching between gears manually. Truth is, by slotting the lever back one to select a shorter gear, you get the same effect on a non tip shift.

Oooh, you are wrong there, sunshine!!

Late facelift stuff was optional, from 1999 or 2000 ish.

Not often I know something you don't!!!

Not wishing to disagre with you Malc but the 202 had the option of tiptronic late 1999/2000 on, I think Doversole's 202 has it, though I will say it is rarely seen in the 202.

My C43 has ESP but no ACR, is that a good indication of tiptronic? Sorry Griz for jumping in here!

Not necessarily...

Look at the gear lever. If you have P, R, N and D, but no further, it will then have two side positions to the left and right of D. That is Tiptronic.

If it has P, R, N, D, 4, 3, 2, 1 you don't have tiptronic.

Hi,
ESP is,nt an indication of Tiptronic only that you can dismiss the idea of having it if ASR is fitted. ESP was standard equipment for the C43.
Tiptronic is very rare option on a C43 as it was only available on the 2000 model and there were only "91" produced for the UK market, the 2000 model had a different style AMG alloys, Tiptronic and revised Transmission ECU/Software

Yes- your absolutely right, I dont have tiptronic but not having ESP and having ASR instead, would you regard that as a good thing?
