Torque Settings on Wheel Nuts

Having seen on Watchdog the program where trading standards officers found that over 60% of the garages in the East Midlands were not ensuring that the wheel nuts were tightened to the correct torque figure after the wheels had been re-fitted with the air-gun, it worried me as some of these so called reputable (well known) firms did not know when questioned what the torque settings were for all makes of car and is some cases it was a best guess using a car that was "similar" to one they had the data for!!

I have experienced this first hand in many of the garages used in Leicester and I have to always ask for the fitters to torque the wheel nuts to the correct settings and in most cases the fitters appeared to guess the torque figure and dismissed my concerns as "all mercs of this type are the same", however when I actually got them to check at the garages I found that they were incorrect.

Also, when I removed my wheels recently I noticed that removal of the offside rear and nearside front wheels were considerably more difficult than the other 2, so if all of my wheels were torqued to the correct settings does this mean then that the ones that were easier to remove had just become loose!!???

Incidently, can someone in the know just clarify what the torque figure is for my CLK 430?

The real rule for alloy wheels is that they should be reset after 500 miles, I will see if I have your figure

Wheel bolt torque on CLK430 is 110Nm for both steel and alloy wheels.

Shouldnt use air gun on alloys anyway as i had bad experience b4 when wheels were damaged by gun spinning against them.
Most garages have signs on walls advising to go back after 100 miles to check torque settings are ok!

One related thing is that they have finally managed to utilise the same wheel bolts for the alloys as the space saver spare (on the facelift W211 at least). :)
