hi all.
I have a 2001 c180 auto, when i reach speeds of above 60mph there is a whining noise.I have been advised it is not a wheel bearing or diff problem.
I took it into local mb dealer and they said there was coolent in transmission oil. They wanted to replace radiator, torque convertor and gearbox, when they told me the price a thought they were trying to sell me new car.
Can anyone advise me how to change gear box oil.

not sure on the car but ive changed loads on trucks and that on the transmission there are usually 2 bolts one at the bottom one at the top undo the bottom one and the fluid comes out replace and fill from top but its prob different on a car think theres a dipstick in the engine bay somewhere take it to a specialist doubt it will be that much

just changing the oil will not stop the problem
what they have told you is correct, there is a known fault with the rads. they have the gearbox oil cooler built in to the side of them and they split, causing coolant to enter the gearbox cooler lines which then gets in to the box contaminating the valvebody, clutch plates and torque converter.

at least you will need a new rad and if the problem has only just arrisen Mercedes sell a repair oil that can be put in to the box after a flush with normal merc ATF, the repair oil contains chemicals that absorb the glycol out of the clutch plates but if the damage has been done to the valve body or the torque convertor lock up clutch then it may be too late and a new box and/or torque convertor may be needed

I have a 1999 A160 that also has the gearbox oil cooler built into the side of the radiator; how can you monitor whether there could be a leak? Is there a "dead giveaway" to anounce when it is likely to occur? Is there a preventative?

Mnhhhh...? Just thinking....

I suppose we could get around this problem by just filling up the coolant system with ATF...:)

Do we know whether this fault is specific to that particular model - or does it affect all ranges & ages?

Do you mean remove the oil from the gearbox and torque converter
