transmission problem

I am selling a 1981 280 SEL Automatic for an elderly gentleman who lives near me.
When I inspected the car I noticed some red fluid on the garage floor under the car (which hasn't run for 4 years).
When I started the car the gearbox was very late to respond so I assume that I have to try and find the cause of the leakage and fill it up with transmission fluid.
Could anyone advise me as to the possible cause of the leak and what fluid I must use?

It is probably from the sump gasket. A closer inspection will be needed. It may also be from the torque converter oil seal. (gear box out job)

I did. Have a look underneath and see what you can find.

As BlackC55 take a look underneath when the gearbox is warm and you will see where it is dripping from

Hi, arghh - the thread stopped - we have S280 1999. Gearbox very sluggish, won't change into top. Having looked, it is leaking from gasket. could you recommend best oil etc and any tips that I think I'm gonna need. thanks

is it automatic? what kind of gear lever - is it P R N D 4 3 2 1 or Tiptronic?

Welcome to the forum the usual place is the pilot bush on the side that leaks, this should be changed,,are you going to drain it all
