Transmission troubles 380SL

Hi!
My car is a 1985 380SL.

While driving along today cruising at around 30 mph, my transmission seemed to slip into neutral and then out again. After I parked it for a bit, I decided to try it again, and the dang thing wouldn't come out of 1st gear. I had reverse ok, but only first gear. And while trying to limp home, it would slip back into neutral, go back into first , then neutral until I finally parked it. The fluid level was fine. Can any one guide me on how to look for the problem? I would appreciate any advice.

Sounds like the gearbox clutch packs are worn out. Which means a gearbox strip.

You will probably find when the sump is removed is got a black sludge like substance in there. The lining of the clutch plates.

Thanks so much for taking the time to respond. I have a feeling you're right, although I'd rather not admit it!

Geez! Whats next? Just rebuilt the motor, now the tranny. I think it's time to cry! :cry:
