Hi there again.
The other day, the missus told me that the ML is making a strange noise.
I took it for a drive and sure enough when the boost comes in, the turbo starts to whine.
I checked all the pipes through the intercooler and decoked everything.
I removed the wastegate actuator and checked for operation.
I removed the pipe from the front of the turbo and dissconnected the wastegate actuator, i then started the engine and revved it with the actuator off boost, there was no air coming through and no noise.
I revved the engine with the boost activated and there was plenty of air and a whining noise, there is no endfloat in the turbo and it spins freely.
Does this indicate that the turbo is broke, if so does anyone have a turbo or know where they are sold at a reasonable price. I have been quoted £300 for a used and £550 + VAT for a new.
But before i spend my hard earned dosh on one i need to know if that really is the problem.

Thanks

P.S. this is the first problem for a long time other than replacing 2 central locking motors and 2 injector seals and rear brake pipe and front stabiliser bushes. This car has only done 70,000 miles do they ever stop breaking?

Do you have any other issues with the driveability other than hearing a whine? Is it boosting properly etc? It may not be a turbo fault at all if all else is OK. It is common for the turbo to whistle when cold for instance - fuel mixture richer. Different sump oil can effect it too. Heavier grade seems to induce a whistle, once again more when cold. Have you changed your oil? Perhaps a sensor is faulty causing extra fuel to be injected. My ML whistles every morning for a a mile or so until warm. I have chipped mine which also seemed to make the whistle more obvious, but only when cold. I would be reticent to change or "repair" the turbo until these sorts of issues are checked out.

There is a lack of boost, the engine seems lumpy on idle. an oil change is overdue but there is plenty in. I may take it to have the fault codes read just to see if anything is flagged up.

lumpy on idle could be an injector, get the quantity correction checked on the injectors, does the lumpiness disappear as soon as you increase revs,
this could cause running issues, increased turbo noises etc, just a thought,

The lumpiness goes as soon as you increase revs, the turbo whines the same with the turbo outlet pipe removed, so even though the idle is lumpy, i'm still thinking that this could be a turbo issue, i have spoke to euro turbos and they informed me that the turbo is a variable vane turbo and even though they spin freely and have no endfloat, they can still be knackered. I was thinking of selling the car before this happened but if i throw all this money into having it repaired, i'll have to keep it. Has any one ever converted a ML diesel to gas?
