my engine temp went upto about 100 on tickover, normally stays on 80.
could this be waterpump failure? as my mechanic said the bearings sounded like they were on their way this morning.

also when i reverse and go around corners i sometimes get a sort of catching sound, bit like the arch liners rubbing but ive checked and they are clear?????

i have a 1998 C180 elegance

Could be, or thermostat sticking.

If it does it again, whack the heater on full blast, if this brings it down it is more likely to be your 'stat, if it doesn't do much then it's most likely your pump.

Are you sure your arch liners are still clear when the wheels are turned and the car is leaning slightly?

Just keep your eyes on the temperture, 100 is OK, you have the visco fan, could be time for the carrot test soon.

Put a carrot in the bonnet star and go for a 'spirited' drive, if it gets soft then your engine is running too hot.

The carrot test is to run the engine up to 80 c + you then take a carrot and feed it into the engine fan. If the fan stops, then the visco clutch needs to be replaced.

viscous fan coupling cost me about 70 quid from GERMAN-SWEDISH-FRENCH AUTOPARTS thurrock essex, part was easy to fit but you need a 17 mm spanner to hold the fan mechanism still while releasing it
