Hi,

I've got a W202 C220 CDi 2000 (X) Estate tiptronic auto with ESP, ABS , brake assist, aircon etc etc which has done just over 80,000 miles. The car is telling me that it is due for a two spanner (B) Service soon. I think I've worked out what should be done at this service relative to the age, mileage and previous history. However, I'm thinking of taking the car to an indie to get the service done. Is there any absolutely critical work I should make sure they don't miss ? Also what is a typical average price for a B service at an indie (excluding additional work) ?

Thanks, Kevin

If they're a Merc specialist Indy (as they should be) they shouldn't miss anything EXCEPT - ensure that if it hasn't been done, the gearbox oil and filters are changed. The schedule for this is vague so many haven't been done at all (used to be listed as sealed for life) but ideally the 5speed tip boxes should be done at 60k.

Ask them to make sure that the wiper drive head is lubricated as this is seldom if ever done in routine servicing and is very expensive to replace if it seizes.

Excellent advice for anyone with a mono wiper.
It is so simple to do.

On my 1999 CLK :-

1) Operate wiper and switch off via ignition switch when it is clear of the parking position. This allows you to freely move the wiper across the screen as needed.

2) Pull off small cover at base of wiper arm

3) Remove allen screw holding wiper arm on and slide arm off. DO PROTECT THE GLASS SCREEN AS YOU DO THIS AS THE ARM IS SPRING LOADED AND WILL FLIP BACK AGAINST THE SCREEN AND CRACK IT!

4) Hook your fingers over the edge of the large cover and pull it off. Other threads refer to clips to be released with hooks and a mirror at this stage. This is certainly not the case on my car.

5) Lubricate sliding crosshead and the wiper arm spindle.

6) Reassemble in reverse order

Do it once a year and save yourself from all the hassle of a wiper failure. It will only happen when it is raining!!!!!

Ah, this one had slipped me by (2000 202 220CDI + Tip, now at 73k). Is this a job for my independent specialist (MercServe, Nottingham), or an automatic transmission specialist, or best left to an MB dealer? Haynes steers well clear of this so I've no way to judge how long/difficult/careful the job might be.

Many thanks for advice.

David

PS: I agree with suggestions thus far, e.g. brake fluid, all filters (fuel x2, oil, engine air, cabin pollen), wiper lubrication a must, possibly the brake light switch about to fail too, coolant, discs might be about done too...

Good description. The only tool you need is a 5mm allen key. Everyone with a 202/208 should do this. Do not use spray type lube, only use bearing type, thick grease. Grease the main piston + both runners & wheels.
