I have today bought a 1982 380SL with the aluminum engine. What grade of petrol should I use and is unleaded Ok or do I need to add additive.

As I understand it these cars were sold to places like Sweden and had CATs during that time, my 1983 TE had CATs.

This means the the valve seats are OK for use on unleaded petrol.

Perhaps some else will confirm this

Hi

My 82 Audi ran on either (did so for over 300,000km). Even though it didn't need a cat, the pressure was on to get rid of lead (not just to protect the cat, which only some cars needed to meet emissions at that time) but because lead in any form was deemed a nasty poison. The EPA virtually banned leaded gas in 85, so any new car sold in 82 in NA had to run on unleaded within 3yrs. Since this was Mercedes biggest market I'm sure they would have been ready for this change.
