I've never really bought premium tyres before. I always buy low mid range like nangkang or nexen.

Is it true if I bought Michelin pilot4 they would last a long time (depending on how I drive of course)

If so, how long?

I would not call either of those tyres mid range. Mid to budget.

Like everything you get what you pay for. Premiums are better for a reason.

different premium tyres can also wear down faster than others due to softer compounding but have a great feel and very quiet. Some premiums can be a bit noisy and last longer as they are harder.

Pur your tyre size into black circles. look at the premiums and go with characteristics you are after.

Personally I have never used cheap tyres. they keep you on the road.

How long do you normally get from tyres?

Everything is relative with tyre wear it is determined by driving style, rubber compound (hard to soft) and use (motorway, town etc). I run MIchelin PS4 on the BMW (conventional tyres not runflats) and find them ok, they certainly grip well can’t comment on wear as they’ve only covered 1k miles.

I buy cheap budget tyres now for all my cars as they are just as good as top quality tyres, or is it that I am a top quality driver :D

Also depends on wheel size. Years ago, I had two consecutive BMW 325Ci, same car but one was on 16in and the next 18in. The smaller tyres lasted twice as long as the bigger, low profile ones.

Are they good in the wet...

Yes, my Khumo's on the SL55 are just as grippy as the Goodyears we had on the 500 and they were half the price :p

Very controversial subject. Opinions differ and one man's meat is another man's poison. I bought cheap tyres once and they lasted less than 10k miles on the back of my first Merc. Never again. I tend to go for mid range or premium these days. I've had good value from Kumho and Goodyear but that's just my experience, like l said everyone is different.

Dreaming of a CL55k - one day maybe....
Budget or premium, a puncture near the edge of the tread could write them off.

I think a GOOD mid range tyre offers a decent compromise of cost, performance and wear.

I've been happy with Neen for a while and General Grabber A/T on the 4x4's

Near us is a guy selling part works which I was always sceptical about, but he let's you pick what you want (I bought 8 once when I found 2 matching sets! You can see them before he fits them so check for punctures, damage etc etc

As he said and I ctually get this "if you've ever bought a used car, you've had part-worns".

I paid £25 each for Michelin's that were about £150 each new, 7mm-8mm tread.

I also always put the pre-puncture tyre sealant in, not had a puncture thats caused any deflation in 10 years (except company cars they won't let me put it in!).

Is it the goop or have you simply not punctured your tyres? (Schrödinger's cat :))

I cannot recall getting a puncture in the last 30 or 40 years..........never used any "pre-puncture". My wife got a puncture is a wheel about 10 years ago (they were building a row of houses in our street and there were nails and screws all over the place) but also no others for as long as I can recall.

I remember in the early 90's the rears on my 5 series BMW lasting 75000 miles, but largely on the motorway and yes I did press on a bit in those days.

If you’re getting 25k out of Nexen that’s a little low, I get about 35k on average (well I did before I stopped doing that sort of mileage), moving to a different brand with a harder compound would give me more but would expect anything over about 40k, with the mileage I do now they are likely to start degrading through UV damage before I wear them out now.
The budget vs premium argument is very subjective, personally I look at the panel reviews of tyres in a consistent environment, if I’m getting the equivalent grip with my Nexen tyres vs Pirelli and wet performance is the same, can I live with a tiny bit of road noise increase and save a couple of hundred quid, yes, yes I can and do.

One thing to bear in mind is, new tyres, especially in UHP sizes may not come with 8mm of tread to begin with. I recorded a new tyre tread depth of 6.3mm on a new set of Michelins fitted to the Supra a few years ago! As we're in the trade these were genuine items from the usual distributors.

As comments above, driving style, compounds and tread levels cause variances in tyre life. Additionally, worn suspension components (read ANY play), misalignment etc also plays its own part in tyre life.

I can easily get in the region of 20-25,000 miles with smooth spirited driving, as well as seeing regular top speed runs from premium UHP tyres. Note, this means, no boy racer wheelspin/brisk acceleration from rest but, full throttle applications from around 60mph+, spirited cornering, smooth driving style etc. Add in deliberate wheelspin, oversteer, cornering at and beyond tyre/chassis limits etc and then yes this decreases tyre life accordingly.
