UK Mercedes Specialists

Hi,
I am new here, I have just bought a 1997 W202 and I am trying to find a decent specialist in the UK (preferably in the south) to give it a "once over".

I don't think there is anything wrong with it, but I would like an experts eye to be cast pver it to put my mind at rest and am loathe to pay the dealers high premiums for what may well be inferior service.

Can anyone recommend any specialists in the south of the UK?

If you want an independant, then I would highly recommend Star Motors in Caversham-Reading.

Really good and helpful people.....they know their stuff. Tel No: 0118-9462750.

Or if you want to keep it in the MB dealership chain, then Tony Purslows in Basingstoke. Excellent service and a lot cheaper than the Greenoaks mafia. Purslows have won dealership of the year for the last 3 years or so. Directory enquiries for their number as I do not have my diary to hand.

I have got a W202 C250DT and they have done quite a bit of work on it under warranty.

They are not very helpfull, and as usual would not beleive what I said was wrong with the car, until I had to demonstrate it to them. (the autogearbox stuck in gear due to an ABS sensor fault).

Not very freindly, took ages to get them to complete work on it and lend me a courtesy car (which left me with no wheels for a while), even though my warranty stated that I would get a coutesy car (Signature MB warranty)

Can't comment on the quality of work as it has not failed since, but I would not go back again due to their attitude. Might be OK if you have bought a new E class off them! :x

That pretty much answers my question. I went to test drive a W203 C220 CDi there a few months ago and they seemed fairly disinterested in the whole thing. Like you say, their attitude seemed to stink.

My colleague, however, bought a brand new SLK320 from them in 2001 and said that he thought that they were always great!

Looks like I will be taking a trip down to Basingstoke instead.

Another thing, what sort of oil consumption would you expect to get on a C280?

Not heard good things about Savernake....expensive also!

I have an early straight 6 C280 and it hardly uses any oil between services....less than a litre.

Lovely engines these straight 6's......smoooooth, powerful and sound good.

What temperature does your C280 run at, in this weather?

I have been driving about today and the temp has run almost to the line above 80. It stays usually between 80 and the next line (100 I guess?). Is this normal, i only wonder as I am not sure all my fans are working.

Sounds the same as mine, ie will hover between the 80 line and the next line up
