SAM unit can fail in many different ways, short circuit or open circuit, they can loose their memory so that the car does not know what it has got

i think the last one that was posted up was around £300 for the part. then it would probably need fitted and coded to the car on top of that.

i would imagine the only way to check a sam would be on STAR!

i have no idea. im not aware of anyone thats ever repaired one but thats not to say that someone somewhere couldnt do it!
