My C250 has a USB socket in the centre console storage compartment under the armrest. I can plug 4G USB sticks into it and they will play fine. Unfortunately they stick out so I then can't use the storage.
However if I plug in a 4G SD card in an adaptor - which works fine on my computer - it plays for a short while, loses track and I get "usb device not recognised"
Format and data stored are exactly the same; and I've tried many different SD card adaptors. Some won't even play at all.

Does anyone have any suggestions why this might be happening?

This can happen on many of these devices, finding the right combination is not easy. any thoughts on using an extension lead for the USB, or would this still be in the way.

is the card SD or SDHC? IIRC there are many devices that although they will read the standard SD card, they cant/wont read the high capacity (HC) version. IIRC also, 4GB is around the area where they could be either

Get an extension lead that will allow you to put the USB stick out of the way.

USB lead can not be used

Thanks for the quick replies; using a lead was my first idea - to free up the space, and make access easier. Unfortunately none of the usb memory sticks etc that I have will work on the Merc when connected with a USB lead.
The cards I'm using are identical Kingston category 4 4G Micro SDHC (SD only went up to 2G)

The situation I have at the moment is that SOME Micro SDHC cards will work in SOME adaptors to some (variable) extent. 2G 4G and 16G memory sticks will (mostly) work OK but stick out so are subject to possible damage.

The adaptors I'm currently trying to use are these
