used A class diesel auto - worth it ??

My father is trading down from an E310 Diesel - fancies something smaller like an A class - probably a diesel.
Have read some horror stories - are they as bad as all that ?? - he will do approx 3K miles a year..

any experiences / thoughts would be appreciated

Definantly go for new model.
I got my sister an A190 avantgarde auto 2000 w about three years ago which had full dealer history and 39,000 miles and in the 9 months she had it the gearbox went,then the ecu packed up,engine started to chuck oil everywhere and two suspension springs snapped.
The final bill at the end of ownership came to just shy of £7,000!!!!(thank god for the warranty we purchased at the dealer)
I then got her an A160 cdi classic auto and we have had no problems at all.
