How difficult is to change the valve seals in a 1995 c180?

Is it time consuming and expensive?

I am asking because I have 120K Km and a noticeable oil consumption.

Hi andreas, Why do you think its the valve seals. If the valve seals are leaking then overnight oil drips off the valves and in the morning your exhaust will give off blue smoke with a definate smell of oil burning, but only for a few seconds/minutes. Is this the case? Or is it simply using a lot of oil. Does it produce blue smoke when you rev then engine under no load, ie not in drive?

To test the engine re using oil.

If you are say at the trafic lights and you pull away, and it smokes, then its valves, or leave the engine at idle a couple of mins, then rev it up.

If it smokes when pulling then its bores.

An compression tester tells all, valves and bores.

I have not seen blue smoke. It is simply using a lot of oil.

You cant use it without smoke, but you could lose it through a leak, if there are no oil marks where you park then you are burning it.

Do a compression test.

How much does it use per 1k miles

I am loosing some from the head gasket but I do not believe that o,2l per 1000km is due to this reason.

Then get a compression tester,under£10

Take all of the plugs out and test the first bore and note the reading. If a cylinder is low squirt some oil done the plug hole,if the reading stays the same, its the valves,if it comes up its the bores/rings

I would do as Malcolm says and have a compression test done first, then you can look at the cost of repair ie rings or valves.

with referance to the above post ... bit off the line .. i have a sl 280 1984 blue smoke at start up as you drive off.. then no smoke engine runs perfectly , i assume its the valve seals , can you change these in situ or is it a head off job . has covered 76k

thanks in advance !

I think it is worth mentioning that a compression test will indeed check if leakage is past the valves or down the bores but will not show if the valve seals are leaking as the valve is closed when the compression is measured.

Worn valve stem seals are usually indicated by excessive smoke on engine over run, when you take your foot off the throttle. Excessive smoke when under load is usually worn rings.
