There is honestly a reason for asking this question (which I will share once I get a few answers! ;)), but what do people feel the top speed achievable in a C220 CDI Coupe would be, given perfect conditions (clear road, downhill incline, wind behind etc etc)?

Thanks, and all will be revealed later!

Are we using the speedo?
Or some other means of recording the top speed with a degree of accuracy?

Ok, I'll spill...

It's not a joke/windup/quiz question, but something that happened to me.

I took my 51 plate C220 CDI for a service at a Merc dealership. It had approx 95k on the clock. I'd had the car for around 18 months. The service, plus brakes all round came to just over a grand.

A week after the service I was driving to work and the engine seized totally. The car was towed to the nearest Merc dealer and, while I was getting a few bits out the car, for some reason I thought I would check the sat nav - it's a built in Kenwood unit that I had fitted when I got the car. I looked at the dashboard feature, and it showed a maximum speed of....152mph!!!

Now there's no way on earth I got anywhere near it - I'm a 99mph max man! I told my local dealer, and said that it must have been taken out and thrashed by someone there. He said basically that no-one would have taken it out, and there's no way it would get anywhere near that top speed anyway. Merc said the car was out of warranty (the warranty documents says up to 100k, but it was over a year since I bought the car) so technically I was stuffed. As a gesture of goodwill though they would go halves with me. They charged me £3.5k for th ework, but I had no real alternatives.

Move on a month...thge car went wrong again. This time it was the turbo pipe thingy (highly technical). I was told it would only be a short job but, as I work away, I could have a courtesy car for a week.

Just to check, I reset the GPS dashboard when I parked it there (and took a photo). I picked the car up tonight and found that, even though it was a short job (only cost £100), that someone had been driving it for 32 minutes, done 20 miles and had reached 80mph. Odd for such a small job I thought. They had even changed the radio station to a DAB station I hadn't even heard of before, and had ejected the CD that was in it!

So, my question was really aimed at finding out if the C220 could, in fact, reach 152mph (albeit in perfect conditions). And does it sound to you like someone at the dealership is thrashing customers cars?

Sat Nav Speed

I have known sat navs suddenly show (for a few seconds) a speed very much different to the actual speed I'm doing. When I was using a portable unit it once showed 500mph which went into the max speed record - and I had fun showing it to mates after asking them "Guess how fast I have been"

I've no idea why this happens, it was not often enough to be a problem and I have not thought to look into it.

Now my car has Comand which as far as I know doesn't show or record the speed so it is no longer an issue.

I've had cars in the past that could achieve 10 -15 mph more than the quoted top speed if going downhill. So for 152mph, less 10 - 15mph would give you a normal top speed of 137 to 142mph, which sounds feasible to me.

I assumed this must be the case, although I've always found it far more accurate than the speedo.

I reset the unit (knowing they probably wouldnt look for it to reset it themselves) before taking it in this time. I would have really expected to see maybe 2-3 miles, 5-10 mins and a max speed of 40 tops (its in a pretty built up area).

FYI - its a Garmin unit built into a Kenwood double din head unit DX2900

I think the answer to your question lies in the roads around the garage (10 mile radius), to do that speed would require a road with a steep hill, very little traffic, no speed cameras etc, does such a road exist in that area?

A 30 minute, 20 mile test drive up to 80mph sounds right if the car had turbo problems and they were making sure they had fixed it properly.

I know - I thought it odd as well, especially at less than 100k. They pulled shards of metal out of the engine block :-?

Basically, what I am trying to ascertain from my question is could the initial engine damage have been caused (in full or in part) by someone at the dealership taking my car for a tear up?

The reason I reset the GPS this time is that I felt sure that is what happened before. I was surprised (as was the Service Manager) that the car had been taken out for so long and driven quite so fast for, what he considered, such a small job (the exact description on the job sheet is 'replace engine boost air dusct behind intercooler).

Coupled with the fact that the CD that was in the player had been removed, and the radio tuned to a DAB station I had never heard of before (let alone had as a preset), indicates that someone has been 'playing'.

I once queried why mine had done 25 miles when I left it for 4 hours to get the door mirror fixed. Got a apology call from the service manager. Appears someone had used it to go for lunch.

Perhaps the excellent techies on this forum can help.
