Vito
Hi I'm a newbie so bear with me!

I have just acquired a 2001 Vito 110cdi with auto transmission, there are no warning lights on (bulbs could be pulled out though), but it only drives in 4th gear - P, N and Reverse work ok, and it wont go over 3,000rpm.:(

I have been advised (by telephone) by a transmission specialist to get it fault diagnosed on Star Diagnosis, I am near Wakefield, West Yorks, does anyone know an independant with that equipment in Yorkshire?

The specialist's opinion was that generally they need exchanging, the cost of which, through him, would exceed the value of the vehicle (about £1700 fitted)
Does anyone know where I could find a, hopefully, decent used gearbox?
Cheers Neil

Thanks for that, it drove back to base 20 miles no problem, today it wont start, the screen read out just says start - then - Error, the vehicle is dead! got a local guy looking at it tomorrow, he'll have diagnostics but not sure if he has the "star" bit - the vito is part of the commercial setup I gather?
So it's really whether I have a indie alternative to Northside Truck.....anybody?

Hi everyone,
Gearbox problem with Vito 112 CDI.
01/2002 Model, 190,000 kms
Transmission light comes on and gearbox slips or locks into neutral.
I turn engine off, restart and can drive a few more hundreds meters before it happens again.
Sometimes car will drive OK for 2-5 minutes in the morning before this starts to happen.
It takes 2-3 be3fore the gear shifts between neutral to D or Revers.
Mercedes Workshop had it checked and computer analyzed and offered to rebuild the Gearbox ($5000-$6000 Australian dollars)
Reading through the forums and considering the events that led to the problem I'd appreciate some advice.

First time the gearbox started playing up was the day after the instrument cluster been clumsily pulled apart,in an attempt to fix the speed dial, and breaking the film cable that is connected to the electronic display of the kms, time, etc.
Initially the car would not shift gear normally when in D, and worked fine when I shifted manual, I took it to the local Auto Specialist, he drove it, checked the gear oil level, and told me that the gearbox is fine and it is some sort of electric/computer problem.
It stayed like that for two weeks.
A friend came by, disconnected the cluster and we took the van for a drive.
It drove perfect.
I drove it like that for 2 days and then the current problem appeared.
The instrument panel was connected backed and showed all other warning light as well.
The car had to be towed away to the Mercedes workshop.
The instrument cluster was replaced with a second-hand, all faults were cleared. The gearbox problem remains.
I know it is a sad story and that I should not be allowed near a car with a computer but I hope to get some help to sort out this mess I got myself into.
