Right just fitted the new tensioner! To be fair the old one seemed just as robust so that deflated me a bit!

On first start up it was fairly rattly! Hoping that was just the oil was not filling the tensioner? Will leave it a couple of hours and try again

Thanks Ronnie

How much was it incl. the installation? The old tensioner on mine was not closing easy enough and new one fixed the rattle straight away. All included was €160 EUR here in Greece (€60 EUR was the workmanship).
I noticed after this job the engine is running a lot smoother while driving.
If the rattle stays on yours specially after a cold start I’m afraid you’ll need the timing chain as well as the guides replaced (which is an engine out job).

I fitted it myself fairly easy, the part cost £83 from mercedes.

Yes it will be a big job and expensive if a chain is needed! I'm struggling to find a garage to do the job so far

Just done a cold start and tried to record it but the volume is poor! I think it's better but still might be some clatter heard? it seems to rev hard on first start then settle down, not heard that on any other videos showing chain rattle

I have same engine I replaced my tensioner an sorted it done about 35k since.

The problem is if you need a chain and sprockets done its an engine out job.

as for Cost I got 2 quotes £1900 at MB main dealer and between £900-1000 at Indy.

About £200 if its just tensioner. I think driving round with a failed tensioner and slack chain leads to chain and sprockets wearing out. if it's just tensioner caught early might be ok
Hi where is tensioner I carnt see it

About

around 80k when I had the tensioner done now on 105k.

Since I plan on keeping mine for the foreseeable I'll probably get the chain replaced in another 5k just for peace of mind.

Its reassuring that yours has 180k I think the 651 is a decent engine just a shame about the chain.
Where is tensioner on these I carnt see it

The 113,s all rev up for a few seconds on start Ronnie. i read its something to do with emissions. Not sure if all Vitos do it or just the OM651

112 and 113 both start with a roar then settle.

From what I recall the 119 does too when cold but not hot.

Smart ditto.

Anyone know somewhere to get the hole the tensioner threads into helicoiled, my (second) genuine tensioner went weak and I discovered the garage that did it previously (before I bought the vehicle) bodged it in with some sort of liquid metal, I've got it out but the thread in the engine is knackered and it leaks round the new one like a sieve, would like to do a proper job rather than try another bodge as it's done less than 250,000 miles.

Any reputable garage should be able to do that.
