W numbers

Does anyone else think it would be a good idea to have a sticky to identify the plethora of W--- ident numbers? There have been quite a few posts where people are asking about this recently.Personally,I know what a W202 is,also a 203 and a 124.A 210 because a mate has one,but that's about it really.Any comments?

Here at MBO we've been working on our own version of this information since Jay contacted us and I'll post the results when we're finished.

While in the US last week I tried to explain the W numbers to a couple of MB owners. One had a 2008 S550 and the other owned a 2008 S600. When I looked at the VIN numbers they started with WDDNG7******. I have the 2002 S and VIN starts with WDB220******.
Does anyone know why this is?

In that case it must apply to Europe as well. Anyone with a W221 in the UK to confirm this?
Also both owners paid around $97k for their cars, fully loaded.
