Hi, I am writing from Mumbai- India.
I have a '84 model 230E. I am unable to set the co2 / air setting on the fuel distributor. No matter how much I try after a few days either the car is spluttering (lack of petrol) or starts giving of white smoke (excessive petrol). Also when I switch the A/c on, instead of the RPM needle increasing it decreases whereas there is audible increase in the engine speed. The same is true when I switch on the headlights !!! Totaly confused.
Also while shifting, it shifts into reverse with a big jerk but 'D' is smooth as are the shifts while driving. Have changed the sparks / coil / leads and the fuel filter. Planning to chage the fuel pump and the accumulator too !! Any suggestions / leads as to what might be the problem or what else I should check ?
Regards - amit

Sounds like your fule filter might need to be changed. The other cause for the co problem is the fule distributor, but that's rare.

Change the gearbox filter and oil and have this done by someone who knows what they are doing. They should be able to tell you if there's any serious problem loomimg ahead.

I would suggest that before you engage in any large expense you check the condition of all the air management hoses. Remove them from their spigots and tape up any cracks and splits. If things don't improve then search a little deeper.

The biggest known engine fault is the fuel enrichment device, a small alluminium can near the bulkhead with some vacuam tubes on top, it sticks.

Thanks Guys !!! Changed the fuel pump as well as the accumulator . The car is running beautifully . No jerks during shifting too !!!
BTW could you tell me the function of the fuel damper ? I coul'nt find a new one out here and have continued with the old one . It looks like a simple elbow joint to connect the tank to the pump and the accumulator .
Also had opened the fuel distributor during the diagoniss and realised that the gasket betwen the two halves is in poor condition as is the small ring filter at the base . Any idea as to the part number for the same or if any fuel distributor overhauling kits are avaiable ?
regards
amit.

Hi Malcom ,
Checked out the site you suggested.
They have the part number for the fuel distributor but could not find the part numbers for the individual parts that make up the distributor.
Have asked a friend visiting germany to search for it. Lets see.
Any answers as to the function of the fuel damper ????
What is the approx. fuel consuption for a 230E auto ? After sorting out the problems above, I got approx. 3.5 km / litre i.e roughly 10 mpg considering 1gallon = 4.5 litre. The car is running smoothly with out any hitches. Most of the driving was with the A/C on and in the city itself. Any suggestions to improve the mileage ?
regards
amit

When I took my 280TE to sweden, one day the fuel consumption dropped to 10 MPG I had black smoke coming out of exhaust, it was the fuel enrichment device that's used to start the car from cold stuck on. My friends 230 TE always returned 30 mpg , where as my 280TE always returned 23 mpg.

I do not have any black smoke from the car. Fuel enrichment device is the cold start valve right ? I have seald the fuel lines for the cold start valve as well as the petrol heater. I have 205 tyre size instead of the company spec. 175. Will that matter so much ? Also I have a set of mexican hat alloy wheels ( not fuchs but BBS ) in the spare. Will changing to them improve the mileage ?
