I seem to be having an intermitant problem with my 1984 W123 200 auto in as much that it keeps losing power on the motorway so I have to pull onto the hard shoulder for a minute and then its fine again.
My friendly RAC patrolman told me that my carb could be freezing up as I drive at speed and then warms up again when I stop, so cures the problem for a little while, he also mentioned that there should be flap on the air intake for summer or winter use, it seems to be missing.
Just wondered if anybody had any simular experience or a different idea what my problem could be.

see if you can figure a way of making the air intake draw air from inside the warm engine compartment instead of cold air from outside the car.

see what happens

silkolene do a fuel additive called rst which helps carb icing....motorbike shops should supply this

Is there not a hole in the bottom of the air intake pipe before (or possibly inside) the filter box? They're normally closed off with a vacuum operated flap to switch between the front intake and a pick up from inside the engine compartment (normally a small metal pipe taken from directly over the exhaust).
Not sure on the 123 200 but every other car I had from that era had a similar setup, whether manually switched with a lever on the filter box, or automatically operated via vacuum (even my 1980 Ford Escort had one) so I doubt Merc would be different.

you should be able to get a "hotter" carb heater element for your scooter...ask your dealer
