W123 oil pressure issue

Dear all,

I have a 1983 230TE here in Berlin, Germany. It has around 295,000km (183,000 miles).

Oil pressure has previously been good, 3 bar at cold start, dropping to around 2 bar when warm.

Now I have this issue, at cold start, the pressure is around 2 bar... the needle is slow to get to 3 on acceleration. But once the engine is warm, I have full 3 bar pressure with the slightest touch of the accelerator.

Surely I should have full pressure (3 bar) at cold?

Something is not right. I'm running 10w40 MB 229.1 and either Hengst, Mann or Mahle oil filters.

I think there is crud stuck at the bottom of the oil pan. The last oil change had black spots in the filter lining.
I've done a few flushes... but I think the time has come to remove the oil pan and clean it properly...

Any tips or advice are most welcome.

Drop sump, look at screen, first run motor on sepperate oil press guage see if same results

I should try replacing the oil pressure sensor. Mine was reading 3 bar all the time indicating either open circuit wiring or faulty sensor. It was faulty sensor.

Yes the sensor fail, and they often fail in a way that just offsets their readings. Swap it out first or test the actual oil pressure with a gauge

Very nice W123 .One, if not the best models that Mercedes ever made ...

I know this is an old post, but the W123 did not have a pressure sensor, it was a pipe directly to the cluster. Have you perhaps fitted the oil filter (Cartridge) upside down? This will definitely produce this symptom.

He is right, its a pipe, that switch is for the light only
