Hello I have a strange noise when I start my car. It is a loud low down whine that lasts for about 30 seconds then disappears. It does not happen again until the engine is cold normally 1st thing in the morning. My mechanic says that it is just the noise that most mercs when they are getting a bit old make when they are warming up but I just want a second opinion.

Thanks Ralph.

Been rebuilding my computer for the last few weeks (don't ask!) hence me replying to a topic from May. I had the same probelm with my wonderful 124 just after I bought it in January. I'd get a noise either on start up or shortly after starting off. I didn't get the noise all the time but when I turned off the a/c it went immediately (I then turned the a/c back on and the noise didn't return whilst the engine was running). I haven't had the noise for ages now but if yours responds to turning off the a/c then I'd recommend running the car with a/c on all the time until you no longer get the noise. Mine stopped about 3 months ago and since then I've alternated between a/c on and off (but I always give it a minimume 5 minute blast at least once a week). Hope this helps. PS I'm assuming you've got air con if not then I haven't got the foggiest what it is!

Its most likely alternator whine.......my old W124 E280 did it and my current C280 does it.

Only does it from cold and that's when the alternator is normally under real pressure......tends to stop fairly quickly....usually when the car enters the second phase of warm up...ie after a minute or so.

Lots of Mercs do this and I would not worry about it.
