Just bought a 1991 W124 200TE as a winter car, covered 167,000 miles full service history. Car runs fine but has occasional problem starting and then for no reason will cut out when you slow down/stop at junctions. The only other symptom seems to be a drop in oil pressure just before it cuts out ! Just been serviced and it was fine then 2 days later back again. Help very fustrated other than that its been brilliant.

I have the identical car in all respects and the identical problem. Being intermittent it is difficult to reproduce to a technician. I have just spent over £100 having the idle valve cleaned and the engine tuned. Ran like a dream for a while but the problem is still there. When not there, the engine is like a sewing machine but when acting up, stalling at junctions and while entering a roundabout is becoming dangerous. I'm sure the problem is fuel but it does seem a very common fault which I feel has a simple solution. Please contact me if you find it on 01264735202. (Andover area) and I will do likewise.

First thing i would check is the overvoltage protection relay sounds as if yours is faulty. Given you a intermittent fault

Many thanks "190". Will reply again with a report on progress. For info. other symptoms are "hunting" between 500-1200 RPM when 'playing up' and total death on other occasions when de-clutching. e.g. to change down at lowish revs. This dying of revs produces poor gear changes and the difference is very noticeable when all is well. Problems often seem to occur after a longish motorway run followed by relatively slow driving on entering urban road conditions. If the solution is so simple why are Merc engineers unable to put their fingers on the problem instantly? Perhaps we all have our own ideas about that one!!

Graham has emailed me to thank you as his car is running much better now, the forums were playing up for him so he couldn't post himself.

Sounds similar to my problems on w124.... Local dealer diagnosed " dribbling Injectors".. I collect it tomorrow after they collect £400 off me.... I'll let you know!!
