I've just had the breakdown assistance out for my E280 because it was leaving puddles and frequently going up to 120degrees.

There's also a chinking noise when at low revs... Is this the water pump?

If so, is this easy to replace? I've put in 10 litres of water today and it's emptying itself onto the driveway

Assuming a M104 engine, no not a nice job. From memory the steering pump has to come out.

When ordering a new pump ensure you order with your chassis no, as there a couple of variants.

If its the pump, it will be running down the block, check also the radiator/ hoses.
