I've just purchased a 3 owner from new 1988 W124 300D Auto with 139,000 miles on the clock.

What kind of fuel consumption can I expect from this engine and does anybody have any specific tips for keeping these engines in fine fettle other than regular servicing and oil changes and lastly do they have any specific weaknesses?

I must admit to being quite surprised with it cruising abilities. I had expected it to be glacial in terms of acceleration in light of it being a non-turbo, but that's far from being the case. Naturally its slow off the mark as per most other diesels, but it gets upto 80 pretty sharpish and seems to have ample power reserves when you're sitting at those speeds.

The other thing that surprised me was that it smokes no where near as much as the E220 CDi I had some years ago.

So far then not too bad other than a hideous screeching noise (sounds like fan belt screech but more metallic) from the drivers side front wheel, which goes if you tap the brake pedal and then comes back as you release the pedal.....does not appear to have a stone trapped between pads and disk....could it be glazed pads/crap quality pads/wheel bearing, although there appears to be no play at the wheel if you try and rock it.

I have noticed that the car had its wheel bearings tightend 3000 miles ago, although this was 2 years ago....the elderly gent I purchased the car from didn't do much mileage. Saying that I jacked the car up yesteday and the wheel spins fairly freely so they do not appear to be over tightend.

Any thoughts or ideas....screeching does not occur until car has been used for 30 minutes or so and will go if you stop the car and let it cool down, which makes me think brakes.

Cheers

I Dont know if its a fair comparison but my 98 E300TD gives 33mpg mixed driving.
Good luck with your new purchase

I'd expect to see 30-33mpg out of it - that's what my 1987 250TD does, even after 230k miles

Apart from oil & filter changes there's not much to do. As yours is a low mileage car I'd spend some time cleaning the wheelarch lips and treating the car with Wayoxl to try and stop it rusting - they all rust in the end!

Corroded brake pipes are a major cause of MOT failures round where I live so smear them with grease to keep corrosion at bay

The screeching noise I would expect to be brakes - particularly if it has non-Mercedes pads or discs. I always use Merc parts nowadays

If the car feels sluggish, adjusting the kickdown cable can help. If you have to floor the throttle to get it to kick down, adjust up the kickdown cable slightly and it will feel a bit nippier

Sticking caliper will make this noise get it seen to because it will boil the brake fluid and with no warning one day you will go for the brake and it wont be there
