Hello, All. My first post!

I need a large, family car and can't stand the plastic boxes and horrendous MPVs that have been foisted onto the public over the last decade, so I want a W124 Estate!

Im possibly viewing a low mileage (89K with full MBSH) 1989 E300TE 4MATIC estate this weekend. It seems a beauty but Ive googled 4MATIC and the words 'notorious', 'unreliable' and 'troublesome' keep recurring.
Is this unreliability relative to the W124? ie. its just unreliable compared to the 2WD variants, but still a highly reliable car. Or is this a model that should seriously be avoided?

I'm going to need a lot of convincing not to buy because the car looks immaculate and the spec list is extensive.

All help much appreciated.

Ps. I don't know how the great 'rivalry' is perceived in this forum, but Im selling my BMW to make way for this car. :p

Ive just read (and searched) the forum on 4Matic. The results are worrying. Dont think I'll take the punt on a 4matic. Will just be nervous waiting for the transfer box to stop..... transferrring.

Good choice. And I didn't say a word against it!

The 4-matic is the only W124 to avoid. Good decision. There's plenty of good 124s out there, and they're fantastic value at the moment.
