Hi

My w124 e280 estate has an occassional exhaust blowing sound from middle or front when starting up.

I have a theory that it is due to the car not being used enough and for short journeys. I must average 40 miles a week and not used everyday. Will it iron out when I get to use the car properly? Can't believe it is about to go after only 93k miles have heard that some notch up 15 yrs or 200k on original (your experiences welcome)

Wondered if giving the car a good hard belt a few times a week might relieve symptoms.

Grateful

I'm not sure whether you're serious or not?

The worst thing you can do to an exhaust is to only use the car for short journeys - the exhaust never gets properly hot and the corrosive condensation sits there and eats through the system.

Agree with Rory, with this type of use you are very lucky to get this life out of the exhaust. A neighbour of mine had to replace the exhaust on his car (not an MB) after 15 months as it had rusted through due most of his journeys being 1-2miles.
Worst thing you can do for your car is do short journeys, the car never gets up to temperature, condensation forms in the exhaust and the rust on the discs is not cleared away.
