Dear All,

The W124 I am interested in buying has a gearbox noise when in reverse. Its only a noise, doesn't affect driveability.

Any ideas what it could be? In the worst case scenario, whats the cost of a gearbox rebuild on one of these?

Thanks for any feedback

Unfortunately I don't know, the vendor has highlighted it as the only issue with the car which has got a full Mercedes main dealer SH and had only two owners. Its on 160k miles.

Just wondering if its worth the hassle driving 1.5hrs (each way) to see the car...

I cannot ever re call a fault of this nature with a gear box,,it may not be a box fault.

Budget around £800-900 for a rebuild or £250+ fitting for a second hand box but as Malcolm said, it may not be the box at fault.

Yes it is, the 4 speed version, which is known to be more reliable too.

W124 boxes can make all kinds of noises - some make a rotating noise in first, some grumble in neutral, some make a rotating noise on the overrun. If it's a rotating noise I imagine it'll be a worn bearing somewhere. It's probably been doing it a while and will continue the same way

If the noise is bad, if the gearbox judders taking up drive or won't reverse up an incline, I'd walk away

At the mileages most W124s are at now I think it's the weakest expensive part of the car

Yes I agree with Bolide, you can be unlucky and have to spend out on the g/box at 60,000mls or it can go on for 300,000mls ,alot of the 124 models have done over 150,000mls know so unless it's got a good body walk away or get him to come down in price. Hope this helps
