I originally posted in the wrong part of the forum, sorry

My original question was:
Is there such a thing as a manual gearbox 4-matic?

The reason I ask, with more detail, is that I have a chance on a 300TE 4-matic with a duff engine, it's an automatic, and a 2 wheel drive 300 saloon with a manual box, which has been "crunched" in the back.
I was thus thinking of taking the engine out and box from the crunched car and putting it in the estate, along with the pedal box etc etc etc.

I was wondering if the "transfer" box bolts to a manual box or is the engineering more involved?

As both vehicles are cheap I thought it might be a good way of ending up with a decent tow barge. I am involved in motor racing and often end up in muddy fields and on forest stages. I have done the disco/land rover route before but I would like something comfortable and capable of pulling a car trailer, a bunch of rally spares and still have room for 4 people, plus not crawl down the slow lane at 40 mph! I am aware of the not so wonderful fuel comsumption but I can live with that as the annual miles will not be that high ~8 - 10K (ish)

Any thoughts or comments appreciated.

I think you might be in luck. See:

http://www.detali.ru/cat/oem_mb1.asp?TP=1&F=124290&Cat=15U

It looks as though the transfer case is separate and both manual and automatic transmissions are listed

You'll obviously need to change the pedal box & etc & etc. But do you know that the front driveshafts pass through the sump?

And then there's my favourite W124 engineering "piece de resistance", the wobbly spring:

Thank you Nick.
I am aware of the work involved if the deal comes off! I wonder if MB ever made manual versions, I have never seen W124 4-matic with a manual box in the UK. Maybe they were available else where.
I realise there are er..... "issues" with the Autobox but, correct me if I am wrong the manual box is pretty robust.

I think that the auto box is the better of the 2 choices, Nick will say he knows them all so well
