does anyone know if there is a repair manual for the 87 300e model?
I have to replace the water pump and because of finances will probably have to do it myself. Does anyone have an opinion whether or not replacing the water pump on this model is very difficult or not? any help or advise is most appreciated.

Looking thru a Haynes repair manual for a Benz 190 - 80 thru 88. The engines look very similar except the 190 is a 4 Cylinder and my 300e is a 6 Cylinder. Does anyone know if the Waterpump replacement procedures would be the same for a 190 as it is for a 300e. I thinking of buying the 190 repair manual since I cannot find one for the 300e

Hi,

I would give it a 4 spanners on the Haynes scale of difficulty.

You need an extensive set of sockets, extensions, swivels and if you want to make it easier, a Snap-On FLXM13 tool.

Unless you have a good selection of tools and a day to spare, take it to a local independant specialist.

I did it, and actually enjoyed it, but it wasn't easy.

If you want more details, I will post links to articles on how to change the pump.

It would be most helpful if you were able to post links to sights that would give directions how to replace a water pump. i look forward to your response

Take a look at http://forums.mercedesclub.org.uk/viewtopic.php?t=1877&highlight=

Search on the mercedesshop.com forums, you will find loads about M103 water pumps.

Trust me, unless you can't afford it, save yourself a world of heartache and let someone who has done this job before do it for you. My local specialist said he would only have charged me 4 hours, now at his hourly rate, perhaps it would have been better than me spending a whole day on the car and skinning my knuckles.

Good Luck,

Richard

Haynes do one for 124 models up to 1993 so your model should be there. see your local halfords or the haynes web site www.haynes.co.uk or the mercedes-benz owners association own bookshop good luck.

Water pump replacement

I recently replaced a water pump on my 250TD and suspect it's very similar on the 6-cylinder petrol engine

Start by taking the fan shroud off - not easy on the early cars as it's in one piece, but it can be done by feeding it through the fan blades - then remove the fan (6mm hex drive as I recall, or it may be a Torx) to gain access to the serpentine belt. Draw a diagram of the path the belt takes

Remove the nut on the tensioner top bolt (at the top of the black plastic mount) and push the bolt back. This'll untension the belt

Remove the belt, tensioner, idler, etc

Unbolt the water pump. Replacement is the reverse of removal... One tip: after fitting the new serpentine belt, to tension the belt, locate the upwards-facing hole in black plastic top mount, insert a bar and use it to tension up the tensioner and to align the mount with the bolt. Push the bolt through and replace the nut. The tensioner is now active and the belt is on without knuckle damage...

Whilst you're doing the job, check the idler, tensioner and all other rotating parts. If they're dodgy, replace them. Replace the serpentine belt while you're at it - they're only £20 from Mercedes. Keep the old one as an emergency spare

God luck!

The issue is the bolts holding the pump to the block on an M103.

They are quite difficult to get to, you have extreme trouble seeing them and need a specialist tool like Snap-On FLXM13 or lots of extensions and ratchets to choose from.
