I have had my 300CE-24 for 3 weeks. Its done 102k miles with full service history and drives perfectly, except for occaisionally (twice) not engaging reverse when cold. The auto box works fine otherwise, and reverse finally goes in when reved a bit. Usually reverse goes in fine. Anyone know what this intermittent fault might be? Is it usual?

Thanks, Mark

Fuel pump relay? (is also used for ATM)

Vacuum hose to gearboX leaking? (helps smoother changes)

Pascal,

I'm taking it into the Mercedes speciallist 'John-Haynes Auto' in Wothing to have a look at. They mentioned it could be the brake bands, so I'm now very worried....only had the car 3 weeks!

I'll let you know what they find.

Went to the specialist...when I took it in it was working fine! They said the gearbox looks in good condition, so did not suspect any serious fault, but believe it could be a sticking valve or a restrictor (?) in the hydraulics that is either blocked or broken. Investigation is a big job, so they recommended leaving it until it gets worse.

Hasn't misbehaved at all since then! Maybe its the warm weather and the ATM fluid is not particularly cold in the morning.

It might need a little tweak on the linkage. Try holding it a little out of the notch one way or the other.

I only ever use D and R but still sometimes get them mixed up!

If you cannot select park, then the fault must lie with the selector/interlocks.

This may interest you.

My 300CE-24 was failing to engage reverse but, usually, only when warm. When it was cold or hot, fine, no problems.

In 2011 I was in Worthing and the reverse problem was getting worse. Finally, I contacted John Haynes and asked them to change filter and fluid. I left the car with them and, as I was walking home, they phoned me to say the old fluid had been drained and that it contained debris. The 'box must be "stripped down". In fairness, they did say they'd put my old fluid back and no cash would change hands.

Anyway, I said no and asked them to go ahead with the filter/fluid change. £230 later they brought the car round and I paid up. The car hasn't missed reverse since and that's almost exactly 3 years.

Having said all that, I would like the 'box rebuilt some time but it is by no means a priority at the moment. Also, everyone in France wants between 2 and 4 thousand Euro to do it!

By the way, it's the 722.5 5-speed auto 'box.

All the best.

id be very tempted to change filter, gasket and transmission oil as in my experience that solves a lot of the shifting problems.
i changed my own last month on my w124 and was £60 in parts and an hour under the car

Thank you Malcom and Nyx due to the weather today didn't manage to have a look but weather permitting tomorrow will be having a look and keep you both posted on the situation thank you both for time and help so far. Will order up some new bushes as a matter of course as the old girl can proberly do with it anyway!

onto another matter now with 2000 W210 E240 she has done 71k and when i ask her to go she seems to lose power and kangaroos violently and sometimes drops out of cruise control too i have changed the maf and fuel filter to which she ran great for all of 24 hours then back to square one any ideas????

Thank you
Angus
