I have a 1991 500SEL with 128,000 mls and it has a gearchange problem . It seems to change all the way into 4th gear before reaching 30 mph or so . Therefore , it seems to be labouring a ot of the time with the economy meter in the Red most of the time ! It also does not kick down ? How does the kickdown system work on this gearbox ?
Any help greatfully appreciated . Thanks .

Two things.

The kick down cables are out of adjustment
the fuel pump relay is open circuit on one of the tracks on the PCB

You and many others have done this, It is easy to get in just use the spare key.
This is a standard feature of the Hella pneumatic central locking system, It is on some older Porche, Audi and others too.

One or two alternative are to break in by removing glass or drilling a hole near a lock and operating the locking mechanism (rod from pneumatic belows to latch) through it, you will need to find out exactly where the locking parts are for this to work, the boot lock may be a good place to do it. Have a look at the parts on another (unlocked) example of the same model.
Before you butcher anything wait for others who may have a better method to reply.
If you have the VIN details and log book and personal ID an MB dealer will get you a spare key made but you will have to wait.
